Aft Deck Covering

Maintenance/Repair Details: It appears that the aft deck has suffered some degrading during the winter months and although the deck was covered with a rubber coating to prevent cracking it has still occurred. So, after deep consideration and thought we have decided to strip all the rubber deck coating and plastic based paint and cover the aft deck with a faux EV teak decking in middle grey.

22nd March: First step to start removing old paint and deck coating.

24th March: Continue with stripping the old deck coating and start sanding the edges. (It's a slow business!)

26th March: Completed the stripping of old deck coating, washed deck, filled irregularities with gelcoat filler and sanded down.

12th April: Following a few weeks of appalling weather we have finally been able to lay the new faux decking. Applied with additional heavy duty spray glue, as well as the self-adhesive backing, so hopefully will stay stuck for sometime yet.

Winter Work - Rubbing Band

Maintenance/Repair Details: The plan being to remove all old varnish and staining of rubbing strake to reveal state of wood work and repair and renovate as necessary. 

Commenced work on renovating by removing all varnish and staining from the stbd side wooden rubbing band. Starboard side revealed several areas needing work. First coat of 10 year weather proofing applied.

17th February - Stripped transom rubbing band noting missing wooden bolt plugs and a small damaged area. First coat of 10 year weather proofing applied then a second coat applied to stbd and transom complete.

22nd February - Stripped port side of all old varnish and stain, replaced missing wooden plugs. Applied 2 coats of 10 year weather proofing to all vessel rubbing band.

23rd February - Applied a coat of yacht varnish to rubbing band. Measured, designed and cut from aluminium sheet 4 protector covers to protect the woodwork in the areas that our fenders hang and excess deck water runs off. Removed old anodes and cleaned contact areas.

26th February - Applied anti-foul to hull.

Winter Work - Wheelhouse Woodwork

Maintenance/Repair Details: Following maintenance and repairs to the woodwork in the wheelhouse the side panels were rubbed down and re-varnished. This included the central engine bay panels which have always been of a light oak in colour, not mahogany as the rest of the woodwork. This has now been rectified and they match the rest of the wheelhouse panels.

Winter Work - Raw Water Pumps (continued)

Having completed the installation of the fireproof/sound proofing on the port engine attention was turned to re-installing the reconditioned raw water pump on the stbd engine. The installation which I am glad to say was far simpler than the port installation and now complete. 

Will return and test the raw water pump tomorrow, winterising the engine if all checks out O.K.

14th December - Stbd raw water test O.K. All engine maintenance now completed and wheel house returned to a tidy state.

Winter Work - Raw Water Pumps (continued)

Commenced re-installation of both raw water pumps by installing the new pump on the port engine. What was thought to be a straightforward job turned into a 6 hour nightmare. Having struggled to install the new pump and reconnect the water pipes I realised that our engineer had fitted the pulley wheel the wrong way around. That meant dismantling all the work done to date, removing the pump, pulling the wheel off the shaft reversing it and refitting. Then the whole act of reinstalling was repeated. Having installed the pump the last thing to do was refit the alternator, easier said than done. With little room to get my hand underneath the the alternator fitting the retaining bolts was a drawn out process resulting in frequent stretching under the engine to retrieve dropped bolts, nuts or washers. 

Will return and test both raw water pump and alternator in a few days time, need a couple of days off! 

11th December - Raw water pump tested O.K so antifreeze pumped through the port engine cooling system, alternator function O.K. Stern gland greaser refilled. Work on the port engine now complete.

p.s have already insured the stbd pump pulley wheel is the right way around.

Winter Work - Raw Water Pumps

Maintenance/Repair Details: Commenced work on port engine with the replacement of oil filter. Having become aware of the wear on the stbd raw water pump the port side pump has been removed and passed to the marina engineer for reconditioning as was the stbd pump in the previous entry.

In order to remove the raw water pump the alternator needed to be moved to make room and in doing so was found to have very bad connections to the rear wiring, with some wires exposed. All connections duly cleaned, made good and re-insulated.

18th November - Due to the condition of the raw water pumps it was decided to replace them but finding new pumps was difficult. Thanks to ASAP supplies a complete reconditioning kit was put together in order to rebuild the better of the Jabsco pumps. We also managed to purchase a rare complete new pump from Mack Engineering in Glasgow.

3rd December - Received from the marina engineer two raw water pumps, one new and one fully reconditioned. Next maintenence log will be the reinstallation of said pumps.

Winter Work - Starboard Engine Maintenance & Raw Water Pumps

Maintenance/Repair Details: Commenced work on starboard engine overhaul. First job was to remove the engine panels and deck to expose the engine, once completed all the old sound proofing & fire protection panels were striped out and areas made ready for new panels. Oil filter housing was removed and old oil filter replaced with a new one (filter housing cleaned inside before hand). Noted stbd raw water impeller drive belt exceedingly loose, needs replacing as impeller housing at maximum adjustment.

5th November - Removed fridge and bulkhead panel to allow access to raw water pump & drive belt. Replaced very worn and loose drive belt and adjusted belt tension. Not the easiest job due to very limited access to the front of the engine.

8th November - Replaced stbd engine raw water impeller.

9th November - Installed new fire resistant soundproofing in stbd engine bay.

15th November - Stbd raw water pump found to be leaking so pump removed and awaiting refurbishment by marina engineer.

Lift Out, Oil Change & Winterise

Maintenance/Repair Details: Having not lifted the boat for a full winter ashore for 5 years, only late summer lift and return, we will be lifted ashore very soon and remain so until March 2022. In preparation for the lift we have now commenced preparatory work by undertaking those jobs which we can do now.

First task was to fix the soft area on the fore deck by drilling into the deck area from within the saloon and injecting expanding foam between the deck layers which solved the problem. Refilled and repainted the saloon roof as good as new.

Carried out oil change on both engines (oil filters arrived today but will not be replaced until both engines are fully exposed due to location of filters).

Winter canopy fitted.

Fresh water tank emptied, toilet winterised and engine anti-freeze checked and topped up. 

27th October 2021 - Kevayling lifted out & blocked for the winter.

7th August 2021 - Replacement Of Fridge

Maintenance/Repair Details: Replacement of fridge - following some concerns with the old Domestic RM4200 3 way fridge it was decided to finally replace the whole unit rather than pay from a reconditioning service, removal proved the right decision had been made! A few preparation had to be sorted first, selection of replacement, type of fridge, size & cost. We selected an Isotherm Elegance 65L 12/240v model so first job was to remove and blank off the old gas pipe. 240v power point was already in situ so the next job was to run 12v power from battery bay to fridge location.

Come change over day and removal of the old fridge we found the old unit was well past sell by date with extensive corrosion around the gas burner flame unit. It was obvious the right decision had been made.

The new fridge slid into place beautifully with a little bit of cosmetic work around the front edges, powered up on 240v and ran a treat. 12v wiring installed and tested, switched between power sources easily. Job complete.

20th May 2021 - Installation Of New Wheelhouse Cross Deck

Something completely different as far as maintenance today. We had an idea to make sitting or viewing while underway a bit easier for our passengers by installing a new deck piece on the same level as the engine cover height. To do this required fitting two new supports either side of the aft cabin door, against the engine cover side panel, strong enough to take the weight of a person sitting or standing on the new deck cover in it raised position. The new supports were made, stained, drilled and installed.

17th May 2021 - Refurbishment Of Engine Morse Controls

Maintenance/Repair Details:
For a long time I have looked at the throttle control area and planned to improve the area. We stated in the previous entry how we sorted out the morse control and now have continued the work by massively improving the area.

The old plastic leather effect covering which was glued completely around the morse control was cut across the joint of the unit, it came away from the origin wood backing easily. The re-exposed wood was stripped of old glue, sanded back and several coats of wood stain applied. A new wood strip was cut, also stained and fixed to cover the area where the covering was cut.

General tiding of the area carried out, step back and admire the job.

4th May 2021 - Started Work On Morse Controls

Maintenance/Repair Details:
Have at long last tackled the issue of a pitted and unsightly morse throttle control. Thoroughly rubbed down and cleaned it before masking up and applying a generous coat of black hammerite paint. Decided on hammered finish as the control was badly pitted. More than happy with the finish, should have done it years ago.

22nd April 2021 - Upper Deck Cleaning

Maintenance/Repair Details:
During the week we carried out a full scrub down and polish of upper structure, chrome work and fittings. Repaired, rubbed down and re-painted after cabin and wheelhouse edging, also saloon window surrounds.

Cleaned depth transducer housing and re-filled with clean oil.

28th February 2021 - Replacement Of Wheelhouse Weather Strip

Maintenance/Repair Details:
Mast & weather strip restoration. Continuing the work on the wheelhouse both the mast and roof weather strip were seen to be in need of restoration or repair. The mast was removed and found to have suffered wood rot down the spine which was treated and filled to restore strength and appearance. Re-stained and re-varnished before reinstalling. The roof weather strip was found to be beyond repair with a new one fashioned, stained, varnished and refitted.

3rd March 20121 - Due to the stern light mounting being originally mounted on the weather strip I took the opportunity of making a new mount so that the stern light is mounted independently on the wheelhouse roof. Light cleaned and serviced while off the boat.

Restored Mast

17th October 2020

Maintenance/Repair Details:
Refurbishment of Wheelhouse commenced today by removing all nav instruments, handrail, fittings and covering around the helm. Wooden trimming removed and taken home for reconditioning & re-varnishing.

New battery installed in starboard bank.

31st October - Finished the revamp of the wheelhouse, recovered the helm window area with leatherette covering, rubbed down & revarnished all woodwork around the helm area, cut & varnished new edging which is fitted along the window egdes to hold the new covering firmly in place and reconnected all instrumentation.
