Making a Wind Scoop

 Category: Hull Work, Decking

We have had some pretty hot weather just lately and even cruising just doesn't seem to reduce the onboard temperature, especially in the wheelhouse. So time to convert the forward hatch into a wind scoop.

First job was to design and print two adjustable hatch stays on our 3D printer, then mount them on mounting wooden blocks in the hatch

The new stays were adjusted and set so the hatch could be set at a 45 degree angle. Then Annette made 2 triangular panels, from 4oz waterproof nylon, which are detachable from each side of the hatch.

The panels are fitted with pop studs for quick removal, or the hatch can be closed with the panels in place.

Now we have a steady air stream as we are going along, or even moored up, if the wind direction is on the bow!

Minor Repairs Liftout 2026

Category: Woodwork, Hull Work, Decking

Maintenance/Repair Details: Due to the small amount of cruising undertaken since the last liftout Kevayling needs some attention to the stbd side rubbing strake, damaged in the high winds of early 2026, a change of anodes and a reseal of the decking. Plus, on close attention, we found that the winch block on the foredeck was in urgent need of replacement.

Lifted on Tuesday 2nd June and first job before going on holiday was to replace the worn anodes on the transom and trim tabs and get a coat of deck seal on the decking.

On our return work commenced in earnest on another coat of deck seal and removing the damaged section of wooden rubbing strake. Other work carried out was removal of the winch, removal of the old mounting block and making a new one to replace it. This was all reassembled, painted and sealed.

Antifoul was reapplied along the hull side (planned work ahead to remove ALL antifoul on the hull).

Small hole caused by wood rot on stbd cockpit support treated, filled and made good.

Deck third coat of seal applied.
