Category: Fuel, Hull

Maintenance/Repair Details:
Finally installed the port side new fuel tank after having it manufactured at Adweld of Rainham, Kent. They produced a complete copy of the old tank with regards to fittings location and size. Tank is slightly heavier being made of 3mm mild steel rather than the original 2mm steel.

Fitted straight in and coupled up.

11th December 2016 - Starboard fuel tank contents transferred via electrical diesel pump to new port side tank. Starboard tank then uncoupled and removed, taken to Adweld as pattern for new tank.

22nd December 2016 - Finally installed new starboard tank and returned the aft cabin to it's former glory. It was a long road having to have two new fuel tanks made and installing them but well worth it as Kevayling remains 'as built'.

Maintenance/Repair Details:
Found port fuel tank had ruptured and dumped 135 Ltrs of diesel into the bilge. Luckily the bilge was designed to capture any fuel lose so water not contaminated.

Fuel pumped out and area cleaned and then fuel tank removed and taken to specialist for examination as to extent of corrosion inside. With the tank removed opportunity to scrub the area and remove all traces of diesel and smell.

Section on the tank cut out which clearly showed that corrosion was extensive. The tank will be replaced with a new one.

Category: Engines, Hull, Deck Work

Maintenance/Repair Details:
Commenced major renovation of hull and decks, also an opportunity to do some engine maintenance. Projected time for the work is four weeks. Started by pressure washing the hull and inspection, all appeared to be in good condition with a few minor repairs noted on the fibreglass keel covering.

Week 1: Lifted out and pressure washed off old anti-foul, placed to trolley and moved to work location. Commenced work on preparing hull for first coat of anti-fouling paint, also cleaned and primed stainless steel trim tabs ready to apply anti-foul in order to deter seaweed growth. Prepared and masked off deck in readiness for rubber deck paint covering. Completed other minor jobs noted since lift out.

First coat of anti-foul applied, deck painted with new rubberised paint to prevent flaking and lifting. All running gear cleaned.

Week 2: Commenced sanding down of hull in readiness for repaint. Made new anchor chain guard for bow and fitted. Replaced section of wooden rubbing band that was rotten. Rubbed down and resealed entire rubbing band with 5 year protection. Removed stern quarter fenders for cleaning and to allow uninhibited painting of hull. Removed all names and icons from hull. Removed canopy for cleaning and recolouring, refitted when completed.

Week 3: Compounded down entire hull above waterline and filled in the many tiny craters found in the gel coat to make a perfectly smooth base for the new hard paint finish. Applied three coats of two pack harden paint and finished off by using rubbing compound. Re-applied names to hull and polished with wax polish. Cleaned and polished deck fittings.

Week 4: Applied second coat of anti-foul. Main hull work now complete. Replaced anodes, greased all drive couplings and renewed fender ropes. Touched up deck toe rail paintwork.

General vessel check before lift-in. Lifted back in on 4th October.
